Structuring the Human Head

In 1954, Andrew Loomis published "Successful Drawing", an art instruction book which featured this drawing of Loomis' breakdown of the male human head. Loomis was a great believer in looking at shapes in everything that he saw, and every face he believed could be broken down into shapes which could be then structured into a face.

Gumby Imagined : The Story of Art Clokey

Gumby Imagined: The Story of Art Clokey and His Creations is currently being worked on by Joe and Joan Clokey. They are pouring hours of loving care into this book to make it the best possible tribute to both Gumby and Art Clokey. We're hoping to reach all of the Gumby fans out there with this opportunity to be a part of the creation of this important book. We are dedicated to getting this book together and out to all the supporters that helped us to make it possible here on Kickstarter. To thank you for helping us, we've put together some exciting pledge levels and cool stretch goals.

Welcome to The Art of Byrd

Welcome to The Art of Byrd!

As with most blogs I'll lay before you an overview of what you should expect to see in this blog ( and will never see ) and what I hope to teach ( and will never get around to teaching ). My other blog is titled The Absent-Minded Buccaneer for a very good reason. This one is called The Art of Byrd for no reason at all. Well alright, I take that back...my pen name is Byrd and I do plan on showing off - ahem, I mean sharing - my art with me dear readers.

So without further prittle-prattle, here's what you can hope to see featured on "The Art of Byrd" in the coming years....

  •  ideas and inspiration in the world of illustration
  •  examples of various art styles
  •  tips and techniques from the masters ( alas, I not be among them. )
  •  a gallery of drawings from well-known and obscure illustrators

and lastly,

  • a showcase of my art, carefully hidden among the stuff that you would rather read.

That last feature had to be snuck in of course otherwise this blog would of been titled The Wild and Wonderful World of Illustration.  Still a good title, don't you think?

If you have any questions or comments about anything that will be posted here in the future feel free to spit them out and share them.
